General:
After working on the farm until he was 21, Cyrus was appointed as assess or of Crawford County in 1837 and was appointed sheriff in 1838. He was e lected sheriff the following year and re-elected in 1840. He entered busi ness as a merchandiser for a short time but then went to Texas County a nd was elected sheriff there for 3 years. He studied law and in 1843 w as admitted to the bar in Steelville.
He and Hannah had 6 children, but by 1888, only 1 daughter was still alive .
In 1848, Cyrus was elected as a Republican to the State Legislature from T exas County until 1862, when because of the war, he move to Rolla, Phel ps County. In the fall of 1862, he was elected State Senator for the Ro la District and served 4 years. He practiced law in Rolla and sold real e state also. In 1870 he was elected to the Legislature from Phelps Coun ty as a liberal Republican. He practised law again until 1884 when he lo st his vision due to cataracts. He served as President of the Bank of Rol la, later known as the National Bank of Rolla. He was a member of the Mas onic Fraternity, Royal Arch, and he and his wife were members of the Presb yterian Church.
