[Brøderbund WFT Vol. 1, Ed. 1, Tree #1953, Date of Import: Feb 26, 2002] John was called "Big John" because he weighed as much as 350 pounds and w as an exceedingly stout man, boasting he could out-wrestle any man in Nor th Carolina. Big John was in his prime around 1833. He pulled any man in the whole coun try under the handspike, that is rolling logs. He once threw a 200 pound m an against a fence and broke his thigh in a wrestling match. Big John had a great number of slaves, and one in particular, was kno wn as Big Tom. After he and the other slaves had been freed just after t he Civil War, Big Tom took the name of Geddie, which is testimony to the method by which they were treated during slavery. Big Toms descendants by the name of Geddie spread from North Carolina to the Borough of Brooklyn, New York. John died when he was 59 years oldfrom fatty degeneration of the heart.
