Alwa ys a Democrat, he deflected slightly only once, in 1896, when the Populist s, Democrats and Republicans all hels their senatorial conventions to nomi nate a state senator in Fayetteville on the same day. The Populists, knowi ng of John's slight deflection, nominated him for the place on their ticke t. The Democrats, hearing of it, also nominated him, refusing to concede t hat he had left the party. Not to be outdone, the Republicans also nominat ed him as a candidate on their ticket. So, he was candidate for State Sena tor on the tickets of three parties at the same time. Of course he was ele cted. Looking back on the experience, he told Henry Clay Geddie in 1901 that "T he Populists sold out from under me, I could not work with the Republican s, and had to fall back on the Democrats after all." John McPhail Geddie was also a Methodist preacher.
