Most of the Gedys (or Geddies) found in Scotland from the 14th to the 18 th centuries were around Fife, and Morayshire, Scotland. Their names we re very much the same as modern day names (James, John, Thomas, William, R obert, Michael, etc. They were ships captains, ministers, Baxters, merchan ts, farmers, etc. Several Geddies held civic posts, some were bailies, pro vosts (mayors) -- city government jobs.

At this time, most people didn't have middle names, but there were a growi ng number of people with the same first and last names, so individuals wi th the same names were often refered to by their occupations, used mu ch as a middle name. Michael was a town bailie (city official) and beca me known as Michael the bailie Gedy. Eventually this practice was shorten ed to Michael Bailie Gedy and thus the middle name was born... at lea st in this family.
