General:
MALLETTE, REESE EWELL, of Birmingham died May 5, 2007. He was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on October 29, 1931, son of the late Nell Burdick Mallette and Reese Ewell Mallette of Birmingham. He was preceded in death by his sister, Ruth Mallette Kelly, and by his son, Lee Hurley Mallette. Mr. Mallette was President of Reese E. Mallette Associates, Inc., a mining engineering and consulting geology firm established in 1966. He was graduated from the University of Alabama School of Mines and received his A.M. in Economic Geology from Harvard University. He served as Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He was a member of several mining and geological professional societies, Tau Beta Pi Engineering honor fraternity, Kappa Alpha Order, the Kiwanis Club of Birmingham, and Bluff Creek Hunting and Fishing Association. He was honored by the University of Alabama College of Engineering with selection as Distinguished Engineering Fellow, and was commended by the Legislature of Alabama for his professional contributions in engineering, surveying, and geology. He was an active member of Shades Valley Presbyterian Church which he served as Elder. Survivors include his wife, Jean Shannon Mallette; sons and daughters-in-law, Reese Ewell III and Clara Rutland Mallette of Birmingham; Pope Shannon and Liza Dolby Mallette of Oxford, Mississippi; and Greer Burdick and Melodie Wood Mallette of Birmingham. He also is survived by five grandchildren: Lee Goodloe Mallette and Clara Shannon Mallette of Birmingham, and Reid Beasley Mallette, Margaret Coles Mallette, and Pope Dolby Mallette of Oxford; and by his nieces, Margaret Shannon Hollis Hayslip of Birmingham; Elizabeth Hollis Walker (Kevin) of Atlanta; Elizabeth Kelly Bleggi (Jeff) of Farmers Branch, Texas; Laura Kelly Burkhard (Kevin) of Albuquerque, New Mexico; and by his nephew Frederick Lindsey Kelly Ill (Deborah) of Cumming, Georgia. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 8, 2007 at Shades Valley Presbyterian Church, the Reverend Dr. A. Taylor Todd officiating. A Service of Committal will follow at Elmwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday, May 7, 2007 from 5:30 till 7:30 at Shades Valley Presbyterian Church (Fellowship Hall) 2305 Montevallo Road, Mountain Brook. The family expresses its appreciation to Robert Bourge, M.D., of the UAB Division of Cardiovascular Disease for his many years of outstanding, honest, and hopeful medical care, and to New Beacon Hospice for its staff's attentiveness to Mr. Mallette during his final illness. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests any memorial gifts be made to the Shades Valley Presbyterian Church Renewal Fund, 2305 Montevallo Road, Mountain Brook, Alabama 35223, or to a favorite charity.
