Carla Guthrie, age 73, a resident of Troy, passed away peacefully as a result of complications from COVID-19 on December 19th, 2020 in Troy, AL. Carla was born on December 10th, 1947. She is survived by her husband, Gary; son Adam Guthrie and Rebecca of Birmingham, AL; her brother Jimmy Cook and Daphne of Elba, AL; her grandson Cade Lyons of Aberdeen, NC; sister-in-law Dr. Ann Guthrie and Magnus of Fayetteville, AR; brother-in-laws Gene Dolby of Grand Blanc, MI; Sam Vogel, Jr. of Little AR and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents Drexel and Nell Cook of Elba and by her son Drex in 2011.
Carla and Gary were married for 51 years and loved every minute of it. She attended Elba schools and graduated from the University of Alabama (Tuscaloosa) where she met Gary, and that is where their adventure began. It would take them to many places across the United States and the world. Carla taught school in Birmingham, Headland, and Troy, Alabama. After retiring from education, she went into the real estate business. She had good times with her close friends and created many memories that will last forever. Her church, Park Memorial Methodist, was very important to her life - she sang in the choir, played the piano, and loved the relationship with her friends there. She cherished her pets and enjoyed watching the animals in our yard. She could be heard singing as she walked her neighborhood listening to her music. She and Gary watched countless sunsets together from their front yard that Carla called her " Drex time" - Simple things, but they enjoyed them. Carla played golf and had good times playing with her golf buddies. She had 4 hole-in-ones in her golfing career and said "it proves you don't have to be good, you have to be lucky" and always reminded Gary he only had one. She loved watching Adam play guitar, and in 2019, traveled to see his band's reunion shows and had a great time at seeing them perform. She developed cancer 10 years ago, which slowed her down a little bit - but not enough to stop her from enjoying and living life to the fullest. She was a vibrant soul that appreciated new experiences.
"Always pray to have eyes that see the best in people, A heart that forgives the worst, A mind that forgets the bad, And a soul that never loses faith in God."
Due to COVID restrictions, there will be a small service for family and close friends on Tuesday, December 22, 2020, at 11 am, Park Memorial Methodist Church, Troy, Alabama.
Contributions may be made to the Park Memorial Methodist Church or the Cancer Wellness Foundation in Montgomery.
