General:

Charles Desmond Yates "flipped a freight" when he was young and rode t he boxcar up north, looking for work during the depression. His friend Cl yde Crumby went with him, and they ended up marrying sisters! Desmond Yat es married Mary Helen Maxine Woodall, and Clyde married Afrona Woodall.

The funeral will be May 14 for Charles Desmond Yates of Eugene, who died May 10 of complications from heart disease and causes related to age. He was 82.
He was born March 20, 1912, in Malvern, Ark. He married Maxine Woodall on Dec. 8, 1934, in Malvern. The couple moved to Oregon in 1947, returned to Arkansas in 1949 and moved back to Eugene in 1951.
Yates worked for the city of Eugene in the street department until his retirement.
A devout Christian, he was a member of the Assembly of God Church for more than 50 years. He spent one year in San Carlos, Ariz., helping with mission work.
He enjoyed fishing and hunting and spending time with his family.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Horace of Eugene and Kenneth of Vancouver, Wash.; two daughters, Doris Alsup of Drain and Cordelia Harwell of Cottage Grove; a brother, James of Eugene; a sister, Mary Grigsby of Malvern, Ark.; 13 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday at Major/Fredericksen Springfield Funeral Home. Saturday's service will be at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with burial at Mount Vernon Cemetery in Springfield.
